Cotton sateen bedding is defined by its weave. Made from 100% long-yarn combed cotton, it is woven in a four-over, one-under structure that brings more yarn to the surface of the fabric, producing a smooth hand, a subtle natural sheen and a breathability that synthetic fabrics cannot replicate. The result is bedding that feels considered from the first night and improves with every wash.

At Moel, cotton sateen is the only fabric we work with for bedding. Every piece in the collection is made to the same specification: 100% long-yarn combed cotton sateen, thread count 300, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, tested to 250 wash cycles. Designed and crafted in Europe.

What Is Cotton Sateen Bedding?

Cotton sateen refers to the weave structure, not a separate material. The base fabric is always cotton. What changes is the way the threads are interlaced at the loom.

In a standard plain weave or percale, threads pass alternately over and under each other in an even pattern. This creates a stable, matte surface. In a sateen weave, four threads pass over for every one that goes under. More yarn sits on the surface, which is what creates the characteristic smoothness and quiet luminosity of the fabric.

That smoothness is structural, not applied. It does not wash away. Well-made cotton sateen bedding holds its surface quality through years of regular use, softening gradually as the fibres settle rather than degrading.

Why Choose Cotton Sateen?

Cotton sateen bedding is breathable, temperature-regulating and soft against skin from the first wash. It suits year-round use in most climates, performing equally well through cooler months, when its slight warmth retention is an advantage, and through milder seasons, when its natural cotton breathability keeps the sleep environment comfortable.

It is also the fabric of choice in most luxury hotels, chosen for its smooth finish, its hotel-white appearance and its ability to withstand frequent high-temperature laundering without loss of quality. The same properties that make it suitable for professional hospitality use make it the right choice for a home that expects the same standard.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification means every piece has been independently tested for over 100 harmful substances. Suitable for sensitive skin.

The Collections

Moel cotton sateen bedding is available across three collections. Each uses the same underlying fabric specification. The difference is in colour and finish.

The Classic Collection is available in White, Beige, Navy and Gray Taupe. Clean lines, no surface detail, designed to compose a complete bedroom without effort.

The Line Collection adds a woven embroidered line detail at the pillowcase and duvet cover border. Available in Beige, Navy and Chocolate. The same fabric, with a quiet gesture toward considered design.

The Olive Collection is available in Olive Green and Olive Beige. Natural tones grounded in the Mediterranean palette, for rooms that age well.

All pieces are designed to work individually or as a complete set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cotton sateen good for sensitive skin?

Yes. The smooth surface of the sateen weave reduces friction against skin compared to more textured fabrics. All Moel cotton sateen bedding carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, confirming it has been independently tested for harmful substances and verified as safe for direct skin contact.

How do I care for cotton sateen bedding?

Wash at 40 to 60 degrees Celsius with a gentle detergent. Tumble dry on low heat or line dry. Iron slightly damp on a medium setting if you prefer a pressed finish. Avoid fabric softener, which coats fibres over time and accelerates yellowing. Full care instructions are available on the Textile Care page.

How long does cotton sateen bedding last?

Moel cotton sateen bedding has been tested to 250 wash cycles without degradation in hand or construction. Long-yarn combed cotton is chosen specifically for its durability. The longer fibre produces a smoother, more cohesive yarn that resists pilling and maintains its surface quality over years of regular use.

Is cotton sateen warmer than percale?

Slightly. The denser surface of sateen retains a little more warmth than the open structure of percale. For most sleepers in temperate climates, sateen is comfortable year-round. Those who run particularly warm may prefer percale in summer months. Both are 100% cotton and both breathe well relative to synthetic alternatives.

What thread count is Moel cotton sateen bedding?

Thread count 300, in single-ply long-yarn combed cotton. This count was chosen because long-yarn combed cotton achieves exceptional softness and durability at 300, without the density that higher counts can introduce. Fibre quality and weave structure determine the result more than the number itself.
